Schumacher Packaging has acquired a controlling interest in Cartiere Modesto Cardella SpA, the Italian paper company which has been producing corrugated casemaking raw materials in Lucca since 1946.
The Cardella family maintains a significant shareholding and will retain its role as company management for the next few years.
Bjorn Schumacher, President, Schumacher Group, said, “In the last two years, the European recycled paper industry has had to deal with high energy costs and has realised that its future depends above all on being able to cope with them. We know that in Italy, Cartiere Modesto Cardella is excellent in this field; in fact, it has been using cogeneration since 1997 and has already obtained two government awards for its energy-efficient recycled paper production process, so I am sure that our companies will be able to usefully collaborate in the future.”
Modesto Cardella, CEO, Cartiere Modesto Cardella, said, “ We are honoured by the attention that the Schumacher Group has paid to our company. We have considered it now appropriate for our family structure to open up to such a qualified partner, who knows the paper-based packaging chain and in Germany and Poland has managed to promote development and innovation in all its plants.”
Cartiere Modesto Cardella produces 200,000 tons per year of recycled containerboard and employs about 100 people.
