Obituary – William Sweeney, Packaging Corporation of America

We are saddened to share the news of the passing of Packaging Corporation of America‘s former Executive Vice President of Corrugated Products, William (Bill) J. Sweeney.

Bill (pictured left) began his career in the corrugated packaging industry in 1966, bringing decades of expertise and vision to every role he held. After joining PCA in 1990, he quickly became a driving force behind the company’s growth and reputation for excellence. He was widely recognized for his expertise, achievements and contributions to both PCA and the industry and was also honored by the International Corrugated Packaging Foundation in 2006 as one of the first inductees into its Circle of Distinguished Leaders.

His outstanding leadership and strategic insight were instrumental in successfully establishing PCA as a standalone company following the Tenneco transition. Throughout his tenure, Bill earned recognition for his many contributions, but most importantly, he helped shape a culture rooted in integrity, empowerment and excellence. His unwavering commitment to people development left a lasting mark on the company’s future. Bill concluded his remarkable career with PCA upon his retirement in 2009.

Most of us who worked with Bill remember him best for his “epic” storytelling. He was a great mentor and friend to many of us, and he will be missed. Our thoughts are with Bill’s family and friends during this difficult time.
