The Swiss paper and packaging company, Model Group, has confirmed it has signed an agreement with Stora Enso to acquire the Sachsen mill located in Eilenburg, not far from Leipzig, Germany.
The mill has an annual production capacity of 310,000 tonnes of newsprint. Model has said it will convert the 9.25m wide machine to produce containerboard.
“The converted machine will focus on the production of lighter grammages and is therefore satisfying our future customer demand,” explains Michael Apel, Chief Financial Officer, Model Group. “This acquisition is strengthening Model’s value chain between paper recycling and corrugated packaging. The addition of Eilenburg provides a good conversion opportunity with an ideal location to supply containerboard to the corrugated plants in Germany, Czech Republic and Poland. The containerboard production volume of Model Group will be doubled after the successful conversion.”
