Klabin starts-up PM 28 in Ortigueira

The new coated paperboard production line, PM 28, supplied by Valmet to Klabin, went into operation on June 9th, in phase 2 of the Puma II Project, in Ortigueira (PR).

The agreement between the two companies was signed in June 2021. In addition to the machine, Valmet also supplied a complete new fibre line (brown pulp) for this project, which includes the new G3 Continuous Cooking system, and a modern bleached chemithermomechanical pulp (BCTMP). The scope of deliveries contains Valmet’s main automation and Industrial Internet solutions.

PM 28 is a fundamental part of the second phase of Klabin’s investment project, known as Puma II, with the aim of producing 460,000 tons of high-quality cardboard annually. It is worth mentioning that, in the first phase of this project, Valmet supplied the MP 27 kraftliner machine, responsible for the production of Eukaliner® paper, made with 100% short fibre cellulose, together with the brown fibre line, equipped with the of Continuous Cooking G3, the first supplied by Valmet, in the world.

This machine will be capable of producing a wide variety of high quality papers, from kraftliner to coated boards, using pulps: Eucalyptus and Pine, Eucalyptus and Pine bleached pulp and BCTMP. Among the products manufactured are Folding Boxboard (FBB) and the Liquid Packaging Board (LPB).

“The packaging paper segment has enormous growth potential, mainly driven by the growing demand for more sustainable options. This new production line brings even more value to Klabin, strengthening our business model, which is integrated, diversified and flexible. With the operation of PM 28, Klabin will position itself as one of the world’s leading producers of board coated with virgin fibres and kraftliner,” says Francisco Razzolini, Director of Industrial Technology, Innovation, Sustainability and Projects, Klabin.
