Evergreen Foundation established

The packaging industry is characterised by a strong base of medium-sized, family-owned companies. Across Germany and Europe, however, many of these businesses are facing unresolved succession challenges. In Germany alone, the sector generates annual revenues of around €20 bn and employs approximately 80,000 people. A lack of clear succession planning therefore poses significant risks not only to individual companies, but also to employment and regional economic stability.

In response, Jürgen Heindl, founder of Progroup, has established the Evergreen Foundation, an independent foundation dedicated to safeguarding the future of family-owned packaging companies. Heindl (pictured below), explains, “The Evergreen Foundation is designed to support family-owned businesses in the packaging industry that are facing succession challenges by offering sustainable and responsible solutions. Its mission is clear: to preserve and strengthen family enterprises within the sector.”

The foundation is governed by an independent Board, ensuring that its activities remain aligned with this long-term objective. Jürgen Barwich, Chairman of the Foundation Board, adds, “With the Evergreen Foundation, we are creating a transparent, robust and sustainable framework for succession solutions. This provides a powerful alternative to consolidation by large, vertically integrated groups, reinforcing the diversity and innovative strength of the industry. In doing so, we help protect the ecosystem of independent packaging companies and contribute to the long-term resilience of family-owned businesses across the sector.”

The foundation’s first investment has been made as part of a succession solution for Poprawa P.S.A., a leading packaging company in Poland. The Evergreen Foundation has acquired a 75.1% stake in the business. Poprawa will continue to operate as an independent company, with its existing management team retaining full responsibility for day-to-day operations.
