Enviricard validates recyclability with DS Smith’s RES

Enviricard, a leading supplier of plastic-free alternatives to traditional PVC cards for events, announced that its product’s recyclability has been independently verified through DS Smith’s innovative Recyclability Evaluation Service (RES).

Launched in 2024, DS Smith’s RES is designed for those producing, specifying and developing fibre-based products and packaging, and offers a detailed assessment of a packaging’s recyclability. DS Smith’s Recyclability experts use lab-based testing to assess the recyclability of a fibre-based material. RES uses the European standardised testing methodologies developed by CEPI and the 4evergreen Alliance to evaluate a fibre-based material’s compatibility with the infrastructure of a recycling mill with conventional process. The RES laboratory is located within DS Smith’s Kemsley Paper Mill.

As well lab-based testing, DS Smith Recycling offers customers of RES access to real-world, large-scale recycling knowledge and expertise through their RES consultancy services.

Enviricard addresses the challenge of millions of single-use plastic badges being disposed of after large and small-scale events by offering a fibre-based alternative that maintains high-quality performance, whilst decreasing wastage and ensuring that their products are created from sustainable and fibre-based materials for easy recycling at end-of-life as they can be placed in domestic paper recycling.

Through RES, Enviricard was able to achieve a clear and comprehensive verdict on recyclability, together with actionable guidance on how to further optimise product design to ensure recyclability. Placing them in an improved position as the European regulatory landscape shifts.

“Working with DS Smith’s RES has given us confidence that our product isn’t just theoretically recyclable – it’s actually compatible with existing recycling infrastructure , and the test report provides us with validated proof or our product’s green credentials,” said Graham Lycett, Founder and Managing Director of enviricard. “In one step, we’re future-proofing our business, reinforcing our sustainability commitments, and offering our customers an alternative to PVC cards that they can feel good about.”

Amy Malone, Customer Sustainability Manager of DS Smith Recycling, added: “Packaging recyclability is under increasing scrutiny, and businesses and brands need clarity, not assumptions. Our Recyclability Evaluation Service was designed to provide companies like Enviricard, with a clear, evidence-based understanding of how their packaging performs in real recycling environments. By testing packaging under the same conditions that are used in large-scale mill recycling, we are helping our customers to make confident design decisions, remove uncertainty, and future-proof their packaging against upcoming regulatory requirements.”
