Biodegradable packaging made with algae

German take-away food service provider, Lieferando, has expanded its range of sustainable packaging with fully biodegradable boxes with an algae coating.

These new boxes are water and grease repellent, free from chemicals and bioplastics. Restaurants in Germany and Austria can now order the new Lieferando eco-kraft paper boxes in the online shop of the marketplace. They were developed by Lieferando’s parent company Just Eat Takeaway.com together with the British packaging startup Notpla. The boxes are available in two sizes. Lieferando has banned disposable plastic from its web shop since 2019 and offers its restaurant partners recyclable alternatives for different dishes.

The eco-kraft paper boxes are the first packaging from Lieferando that is 100% natural and can be completely decomposed – without any chemical residues. They can be disposed of in an environmentally friendly way in the paper waste, in the bio bin or on the compost. The production is also particularly resource-saving. This is because seaweed grows quickly in salt water without consuming fresh water for cultivation.

“We are fully committed to building a more sustainable future for restaurant food packaging,” says Robin Clark, Senior Director Global Partnerships & Sustainability, Just Eat Takeaway.com. “Reusable systems and the Lieferando eco-kraft paper boxes are part of this strategy. They offer all the advantages of conventional plastic packaging – and save valuable resources. We have been supporting Notpla in the development since 2018 and are currently working on further solutions’s partnership and CSR strategy.”
