Billerud has launched a new generation of Billerud Flute, offering increased compression strength and the potential for corrugated converters to reduce packaging weight while maintaining required box performance.

The development has been enabled by new headbox technology at Billerud’s Gruvön production site, allowing greater control and optimisation of fibre formation. According to the company, the resulting increase in compression strength provides converters with greater scope to optimise corrugated board structures and reduce material consumption.
In packaging tests, solutions produced using the new Billerud Flute demonstrated the potential to reduce packaging weight by up to 25% while maintaining box performance. In one fruit tray application, an optimised design also delivered a 35% reduction in global warming potential (GWP) compared with the original solution, based on results from Billerud’s Packaging Sustainability Tool.
“Billerud Flute has been known for its strength for decades. With this new generation, we are taking that performance further,” said Martin Svensson, SVP Business Area Board, Billerud. “The increased strength gives converters greater freedom to optimise packaging designs for improved performance, lower weight and more efficient material use, without compromising runnability.”
The new grade has been developed for demanding corrugated applications, including fruit and vegetable packaging and heavy-duty packaging. Billerud will also support converters using the material through its BoxLab service, which combines packaging testing, data and technical expertise to optimise packaging performance, sustainability and cost efficiency.
