UK-based drinks brand Innocent Drinks has partnered with alternative materials specialist Notpla to trial edible flexible packaging for one its range of concentrated shots.
For the limited time trial last week, residents of Nobottle, a small hamlet in Northamptonshire, were given the chance to try Innocent Fiery Ginger shots packaged using Notpla’s edible Ooho technology.

Ooho is an edible bubble made from seaweed that encapsulates liquids and foods. It is manufactured using seaweed and other plant-based materials, has a flexible membrane with no taste or smell, contains no conventional plastic, and can be eaten along with its contents.
When not eaten, the membrane is designed to biodegrade naturally.
For this pilot, which was also rolled out to students at Coventry University for the trial period, Innocent and Notpla worked together to see how Ooho could be successfully demonstrated as a replacement for labelled PET bottles.
Each Ooho pod contained 12ml of the Fiery Ginger shot, enclosed in the thin seaweed-based membrane.
In announcing the trial, Notpla stated, “It’s another example of how collaboration between brands and material innovators can open up new possibilities for packaging in the activation space, starting with something as familiar as a ginger shot.”

Nobottle was chosen as the location for the Ooho pod trial
