Plans for extended shutdown at Kemi mill in Finland

Metsä Board will suspend white kraftliner production at its Kemi mill in Finland during an extended maintenance shutdown in the fourth quarter of 2026. The company has not specified the exact duration of the extended shutdown.

The longer-than-usual stoppage is required to accommodate the renewal of the cooking process at Metsä Fibre’s adjacent Kemi bioproduct mill. ANDRITZ has been selected to supply technology for the wood chip feeding process, with the upgrade intended to support the mill’s future production capacity.

The shutdown will also coincide with the modernisation of the winder at Metsä Board’s Kemi board mill, scheduled for October–November 2026. The investment is intended to improve production efficiency, product quality and supply reliability. The mill has an annual production capacity of approximately 465,000 tonnes of coated white kraftliner.

The company reported white kraftliner deliveries of 380,000 tonnes during January–September 2026, compared with 356,000 tonnes in the corresponding period last year.

Metsä Board also reported improving market conditions for white kraftliner, with capacity closures in Europe and North America contributing to a better balance between supply and demand and supporting price increases.
