Billerud has published its ‘Packaging Tomorrow 2026’ trend report, identifying six trends expected to influence the future development of the packaging industry, with sustainability, circularity and changing regulatory requirements among the key themes.
Based on interviews with industry experts and Billerud specialists alongside wider research, the report highlights growing demand for fibre-based packaging as companies seek alternatives to fossil-based materials. It also identifies lightweighting and reduced material use as important considerations, while stressing the need to maintain packaging performance and product protection.
“Packaging has become a strategic business and sustainability issue,” said Anna Jonhed, Vice President Global Innovation, Billerud. “Decisions about materials, design and recyclability affect costs, compliance and brand value. The focus is now shifting from ambition to execution. Solutions must work in practice.”
The report also highlights the increasing importance of designing packaging around circularity and recyclability as companies prepare for changing regulatory requirements.
“The future of packaging is not about optimising a single factor,” added Jonhed. “Companies need solutions that balance sustainability, performance and business value. Those that can turn ambition into action will be best positioned to succeed.”
