Palm Group has confirmed plans to convert its PM 7 at its King’s Lynn, UK, paper mill from newsprint to corrugated case material (CCM) production, with the conversion scheduled for the first quarter of 2027.
Built on a greenfield site in 2009, the King’s Lynn mill has undergone continuous investment and expansion. Palm said PM 7, with a width of 10.6m, is one of the world’s widest newsprint paper machine, while investments including an on-site power plant have established the facility as one of Europe’s most modern paper mills. Following the conversion, PM 7 will manufacture lightweight recycled corrugated case material in basis weights from 60 gsm, with production capacity increasing to up to 700,000 tonnes per year.
Palm said the machine’s technological capabilities and width will enable it to produce a broad range of paper reel widths, allowing the company to supply customers in the UK and mainland Europe with greater flexibility and shorter lead times. From March 2027, Palm will produce corrugated case material across four paper mills in Germany, France and the UK.
Despite the investment in corrugated packaging grades, Palm said it remains committed to the newsprint sector. The company will continue newsprint production at its Eltmann paper mill in Germany, where two paper machines have a combined annual capacity of 550,000 tonnes.
