W.H. Leary has equipped Smurfit Westrock’s newly opened Dublin facility with a next generation, integrated hotmelt, cold glue, and advanced quality assurance platform, setting a new benchmark for automation and precision in clinical packaging production.
The Leary Array 24 channel / 24 pattern system boasts six Sempre-i cold glue valves with CleanStart and iTac glue inspection, Pharmacode and iCode camera inspection, 4-hot melt valves with inspection, glue pot fill and an In-line Diverter ejector.
At the heart of the installation is Leary’s industry leading Monet graphical user interface, built on the company’s fully unified Array control platform. Monet centralises every element of gluing, inspection, and process monitoring into one intuitive environment, giving operators faster setup, realtime insight, and unmatched operational control.
To further elevate automation performance, Leary provided its diverter ejector, custom engineered to Smurfit Westrock’s specifications to replace the existing OEM ejector, improving consistency and workflow efficiency. The line also features dual Robatech hot melt tanks, enabling simultaneous application of different adhesives, a capability that directly supports the high‑complexity jobs at the Dublin plant.
Chris Richardson, Manufacturing Manager, Smurfit Westrock, said, “This installation came at a crucial time, coinciding with our move into the new purpose‑built factory. While we are very experienced users of high‑end gluing and QA systems, Leary distinguished themselves through listening, strong engineering insight, and technology that truly matched our needs. The upgrade to the Leary ejector has dramatically improved operator access and system reliability, and Leary’s training has been extremely well received too.”
Louis Walker, Converting Industry Team Lead, W. H. Leary, commented, “This is the first Leary system to be installed at the Dublin site, and operator feedback has been exceptional. They’ve highlighted the system’s ease of use, the intelligence of Monet, and appreciate the advanced functionality that was previously unavailable to them. Because of the technical sophistication of the jobs run on this line, our pre‑sales engineering collaboration was extensive. Multiple customer visits to Ireland and Leary in the UK ensured we validated the critical elements of the solution ahead of time. Smurfit Westrock’s team is highly skilled, and the partnership throughout this project has been outstanding.”
