DS Smith makes progress at Lucca Paper Mill

DS Smith, an International Paper Company, has shared the latest advancements from its new paper machine (PM3) – one of the most significant investments in the company’s history. This major upgrade at the Lucca Paper Mill marks a pivotal step in its ongoing commitment to innovation, sustainability, and long- term growth.

“Our investment in PM3 is strategically designed to meet the rising demand for high-performance packaging papers while enhancing energy efficiency and reducing CO₂ emissions,” said the company. “Modernising our operations not only enhances product quality but also optimises resource usage, reinforcing our position as a leader in sustainable packaging solutions. The journey towards this transformation is well underway, and we are excited about the benefits it will bring to our customers and the environment alike.”

DS Smith has celebrated a significant milestone with the successful lifting of the new Drum Pulper, a crucial component for the OCC area that will support PM3. This impressive piece of equipment, supplied by ANDRITZ, is fundamental to the efficient raw material processing.

Weighing in at 235 tonnes, measuring 48m in length, and boasting a diameter ranging from 4.5 to 5.6m, it is the largest of its type. The Drum Pulper is powered by two electric motors, each with a capacity of 1000 KW. Once fully operational, it will have the capability to produce up to 1650 tonnes of stock each day, ensuring that they operate efficiently and sustainably.

The journey of the Drum Pulper has been remarkable. Manufactured at Andritz China, it took approximately six months to build before embarking on an extensive journey, including a 10-week sea voyage to Livorno Port, just 50 km from the mill. After navigating a meticulous transport process, with the last section arriving on 1st October, it underwent three months of assembly before taking its proud place at PM3.

“The big lift of the Drum Pulper is a major milestone, not only for the stock preparation project at DS Smith, but also as the 300th Drum Pulper delivered by Andritz,” said Helmuth Stoni, Senior Project Manager, Andritz. “We are confident that the new line will set new standards in recycled fibre processing.”

DS Smith has also confirmed a critical partnership with Valmet through a three-year maintenance agreement, designed to support PM3’s startup and bolster the development of our local maintenance teams. This collaboration signifies the unwavering commitment to operational excellence and continuous improvement.

To commemorate this partnership,  a signing event was held — a moment of significance for all participants. With Valmet’s world-class maintenance expertise now at its disposal, it’s excited to foster skill development, ensuring PM3 functions at its peak for years to come.

“From the meticulous planning and logistics to the seamless execution and implementation, this journey has been powered by the passion and commitment of our people. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone involved in bringing these milestones to life,” said Alessandro Romagnolo, Head of Project PM3.
