Marbach’s split anvil for tear-open functionality

Marbach is successfully marketing its split anvil. This intelligent solution for reducing make-ready times simplifies the set-up process for packaging with the tear-open function reverse-cutting.

“Reverse-cutting is a popular tear-open mechanism because the paperboard looks intact from the outside, before opening and does not spoil the design of the package,” said Rainer Reizammer, R&D at Marbach Die-Cutting Technology. “In production, this function is not uncomplicated. This is because the paperboard is scored slightly offset from the inside and outside during reverse-cutting. This creates a lot of potential for errors during die-cutting. If the technology is not 100% accurately set-up, the tear-open mechanism will not function properly later. Either the packaging will be cut through and therefore already open, or if the scoring is too low, the packaging will not open properly. It is not easy to hit the perfect point when setting up conventional reverse-cutting. To save our customers time and trouble when setting up reverse cutting technology, we have developed the split anvil.”

The contour-milled aluminium block is split in two and the upper part of the anvil is screwed onto the lower part of the anvil. Between the two parts there are special underlay foils in various thicknesses. The height of the anvil can be adjusted very quickly and easily by removing or adding the foils.

Reizammer concludes, “The special design of the split anvil is designed so that the machine operator can adjust the height of the anvil individually from the front of the tool when setting up the cutting-die. The continuous aluminium design eliminates the possibility of compression during the scoring process. In addition, any necessary make-ready of the scoring rule or counter-scoring rule is prevented from spreading to the nearby anvil and thus influencing the scoring result.”
