Carton Excellence Awards 2018

Pro Carton and the European Carton Makers Associations (ECMA) are calling on brands to submit their creative and sustainable packaging designs in a bid to recognise and reward the most innovative concepts using cartonboard packaging. The Carton Excellence Awards are recognised as Europe’s most prestigious packaging accolades, celebrating the efforts made by FMCG brands to reaffirm their commitment to using sustainable materials, as well as embracing innovation in design.

With the packaging waste debate making daily headlines across Europe and brands increasingly turning to more sustainable materials to help reduce waste and prevent further damage to the environment, cartonboard packaging is unsurprisingly making significant gains worldwide. For more than 20 years, the awards have recognised brands embracing cartonboard packaging, and reward true sustainability in design, thanks to the material’s renewable, compostable and recyclable qualities.

With nine different categories and the ultimate honour of the Carton of the Year award, brands are invited to submit their packaging designs for consideration.   All entries must have been available on the European market within the last three years, and entries are welcome from across the supply chain with carton converters, designers, brand owners and retailers encouraged to submit their favourite packaging concepts.

New for 2018, the categories have been revised to better reflect the market split:
  • Dry Foods & Beverages (including tea, coffee, soft drinks, beer and wine);
  • Frozen & Chilled Foods;
  • Fast / Convenience Food (including paper cups);
  • Confectionery, Luxury Goods (including spirits and wines, beauty and gifts);
  • Healthcare & Pharmaceuticals;
  • Non-food.

These categories are now joined by two further categories: the ‘Save the Planet’ award, which recognises packaging designs that have made a significant contribution to helping the environment and the ‘Innovative Material’ category, for newly developed cartonboard or paper-based substrates. Also returning for 2018, consumers will be invited to vote for their favourite packaging concept in the ‘Public Award’.

Winners from the 2017 awards included JDE’s L’OR, Davidoff, HAL Allergy Group and LIQ while Domenis1898’s Geometrie Cividât gin took the ultimate accolade of Carton of the Year.  The finalists included many famous brands including Lipton, Nestlé, Johnnie Walker, Stoli, Findus, Domino’s and UK retailer, Sainsbury’s.

Speaking about the awards, Tony Hitchin, General Manager, Pro Carton, said, “We’re delighted to announce that the Carton Excellence Awards 2018 are now open for entries.  Every year, the judges are delighted by the quality of new cartonboard packaging concepts. As brands recognise and make the move to more sustainable packaging materials, we hope to see even more entries and more inventive ways of using cartonboard to promote and communicate product and brand values – whether that’s for premium brands or everyday goods.”

The winners of the Carton Excellence Awards 2018 will be announced at a prestigious gala during the ECMA Congress in Riga, Latvia on September 20th 2018. The deadline for entries is Thursday 17th May 2018.
