25 years in Nordhausen

Thimm Packaging Systems is celebrating its 25th anniversary at its Nordhausen site: the company has been firmly integrated into the region for a quarter of a century and has grown steadily at its production site in Thuringia. The anniversary celebrated on 31st August, 2019, took place on the company’s premises. Around 750 employees and family members accepted the invitation to the celebration.

“We are proud that we have become an integral part of the region over the past 25 years,” says Carsten Niedenführ, Managing Director (pictured below). “This is a wonderful occasion to say ‘Thank you’ to our employees in the form of a celebration.”

The company in Nordhausen is a division of the Northeim-based THIMM Group. The Thimm Packaging Systems division specialises in multi-material packaging and related services such as packaging development, packaging services and needs-based logistics solutions.

“When the demand for packaging systems rose sharply at the beginning of the 1990s, particularly in the automotive industry, it quickly became clear that customer enquiries with small quantities and high packaging costs could no longer be met in Northeim. In the search for further production halls, the old premises of IFA-Motorenwerke in Nordhausen were found,” says Carsten Niedenführ, explaining the choice of location. The Thimm Packaging Systems division, which was founded in 1994 as a subsidiary of the Thimm Group under the name Thimm Verpackung und Service GmbH, started operations in Nordhausen with five employees and 1,500 sqm of production space.

Niedenführ describes the development of the company. “Our headquarters in Nordhausen has grown continuously over the past 25 years. Today, almost 400 employees work here, the production area has increased to more than 50,000 m. and is spread over three factory buildings with corrugated board processing, wood production and packaging. An additional expansion of the site is planned.”

In addition to four other German sites in Neuburg an der Donau, Bremen, Duisburg and Germersheim, production will also take place in Chotětov (Czech Republic) and Puebla (Mexico).

The range of services starts with the development of the packaging, adapted to the contents to be transported. Protection, costs and environmental compatibility are the decisive criteria here. In addition to the automotive industry, Thimm Packaging Systems today develops packaging systems for customers in the medical, solar, construction and technology sectors.

“We work independently of materials and can therefore always use the raw materials best suited to customer requirements. These include solid board, corrugated board, foams, wood and special protective films. What we do not produce ourselves, we obtain from qualified partners,” concludes Niedenführ. “The focus is always on finding the best solution.”
